Society in the 2000s had lots of tragic and major events, affecting people globally, like climate change, terrorism, and national security. These things happened in the 2000s, but lots of other things happened that have the same or more importance, that will be explained in the following paragraphs. Terrorism Terrorism was the biggest or one of the biggest topics in the 2000s, especially the attack of 9/11. The attack of 9/11 is something that stands out in people's memories, people can tell where they were, and what they were doing on that day because of 9/11. Two planes had crashed into the Twin Towers destroying them and one plane crashed into the Pentagon. Thousand of people died, and America was affected tremendously. The attack of 9/11 affected people mentally and made them feel insecure, and at risk for another attack. Terrorism made America what it is today and made it better, tougher, and stronger for example more security was added especially to our borders. Since then there has been four terrorist attack on U.S. soil. National Security After the attack of 9/11, National security was questioned. The first thing America did to stop the attacks were to add more metal detectors, people had to have a ticket to get in the airport, and having to show a passport. Then added more roles like taking shoes off, people have to have a certain sized container for liquids to bring them on the plane, and more random checks/searches. These would all help America be more safe, but one thing that helped America was allowing for things that were private to be public, like records, purchases, and etc. these would help America be more safe, by exposing information that would help find criminals and more. The Environment The Environment was not doing well because of pollution, for example China’s C02 emissions increase by 11% making the atmosphere heat rise at a faster rate, and also the Environmental Protection Agency found the governors of 31 states, that their state's air pollution does not meet federal health standards, and it affects 159 million people. This are major problems, but something way more important than these two facts in climate change. Climate Change will make Polar Bears extinct, and many other ice dwelling animals. It has caused a Australia, and is melting ice at a rapid rate. In August, Arctic sea ice hits at an all-time low because of climate change. Climate Change was thought to be a future problem, but was already affecting people in the late 2000s. Climate Change is still affecting people today. Iraq War The start of the Iraq after an American invasion and “shock and awe” campaign which is lots of airstrikes, bombing and invasions, 500,000 soldiers died in total, 600,000 Iraqis died. The war killed many and Iraq threatened the U.S. weapons of mass destruction. The U.S. had won the first Iraq war but not the 2nd. The Iraq war is connected to 9/11, and other terrorist attacks. Those reasons are why society is important in the 2000s, and should told to future generations. Pictures of Iraq war(top)

Speech from Bush shortly after the attack of 9/11 “Good evening. Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes or in their offices: secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers, moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror. The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge -- huge structures collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining. Today, our nation saw evil -- the very worst of human nature -- and we responded with the best of America. With the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could. Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington D.C. to help with local rescue efforts. Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks. The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business as well. The search is underway for those who were behind these evil acts. I have directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them. I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance. America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world, and we stand together to win the war against terrorism. Tonight, I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a Power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for you are with me. This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world. Thank you. Good night. And God bless America." |
“ I remember that I was at my mom’s house getting ready for work and watching the news, and hearing it and being in shock. My wife and I both looked and stared at the TV thinking it was a dream.” said Michaele LaForge
